If You Do Not Have Health Insurance Because You Cannot Afford It We Have A Nice Surprise For You.
by Donald Saunders
A staggering one in five adult Americans consider that they cannot afford adequate health care according to the latest figures released by the CDC (Centers for Disease Control). So, are you one of the more than 40 million people who are not able to sleep peacefully because of the fear of being unable to afford the cost of medical treatment in the event of accident or illness? Perhaps more importantly, have you got to be amongst the 40 million?
The report of the CDC which was made public in 2007 and explored health around the US looked in detail at a number of aspects of health care and revealed that:
1. Ten percent of people cannot currently afford the cost of prescription medicines.
2. Ten percent of people postpone having medical treatment because of the price.
3. No fewer than nearly one in three young people aged between 18 and 24 do not have a usual source of medical treatment or health insurance.
4. Ten percent of people between 45 and 64 do not have a usual source of medical treatment and roughly fifty percent of these people find themselves with hypertension, a serious heart problem or diabetes.
5. One out of every 5 individuals below the age of 65 are uninsured for at least a portion of each year, with most having no insurance throughout the year.
A lot of people are fortunate enough to get health cover through schemes run by their employer, though rising costs are forcing a growing number of employers to reduce the cover under their employee health insurance plans or to do away with them altogether. However, there are also millions of people who cannot get cover under their employment and who must arrange their own health cover. It is this second group which usually considers that health insurance is simply too costly.
So are you correct to dismiss the idea of getting medical insurance out of hand merely because you believe that it costs too much? Health insurance plans come in all shapes and sizes and, in spite of the fact that a traditional plan can be expensive, there are many less expensive alternatives.
Put simply, health insurance falls into roughly two categories comprising disability income plans and medical expense plans. The first is designed to cover your lost income if you are unable to work through disability while the latter covers you for the cost of medical treatment arising out of injury or accident.
Each of these forms of health insurance can be purchased as a single plan or separately and separate policies can further be broken down to provide cover for particular areas like accident coverage, basic medical expenses, major medical expenses, hospital care and a great deal more.
Additionally, cover today can be offered by not merely traditional insurers, but also by several group organizations, companies like Blue Cross Blue Shield, HMOs and PPOs, each of which offers a wide range of policies with payment options that match almost every pocket book.
If you have been frightened by the thought that you simply cannot afford to buy health insurance then think again. You might not be able to buy a comprehensive plan covering every possible eventuality but it is a sure bet that you will be able to discover a plan which will give you enough coverage to provide you with peace of mind.
